AVENA 411 POW POW!!!!

We are only a few weeks away before school starts, and everyone is wondering what is the latest update on the Avena Lounge renovation. Wouldn’t you like to know? Although throughout the summer Avena Lounge remained close.  Mr. Best who is the chairman has been working on creating a better atmosphere for the place we call The Social Hub. This required some overall changes about appearance and ambiance.

What is the 411? Avena lounge is repainted; the colors are bright and vibrant.  The atmosphere is livelier; students will feel and see much of difference when walking into the lounge. The pool tables are refurbished, and the pool room is also under construction. It will look more like a game room.  Anime Connection Club is an organization that encourages arts on our campus.  There are well known for making comics.  Anime Connection Club will be exposing their art works in the pool room; they will paint animations on the wall. These murals will reflect on the games we offer at the lounge.

There will be plants in front of the entrance which will make it look more attractive. Also there should and will be an Avena Lounge sign. As far as getting new furniture, that is still something on the to-do list that has not yet been accomplished. Ultimately the goal is to make Avena Look like an actually Lounge, or a sports bar.  Renovation has been an issue for quiet sometimes, and it feels like nobody really care about how The Avena Lounge look.

Important people like the provost, the deans visited the lounge occasionally. Many of our students wonder why they never attend student related events.  Nobody seems to have an answer to this question. Therefore working on an appealing appearance for the Avena Lounge is not about impressing anybody. It is about creating a comfortable and relaxing environment to the students during their visit to the lounge.

WHAT DO YOU REALLY THINK ABOUT THE AVENA STAFF?????

The man in charge of the Avena Lounge had mentioned in a previous interview the challenges he faced when recruiting for his employees is to find the right candidates “Putting together a good staff that has the vision and mission for the Avena Lounge. Some people don’t one hundred percent maintain family cohesiveness”. It is very important for the staff to be able to work independently and also represent the lounge very well.

“The Avena staff are a great bunch of individuals aka my friends, but I believe that they are so laid back because of the lounge itself there is nothing really for them to do, being the fact that the Avena lounge is always “dead” so the staff at the lounge are wonderful but they don’t need to be talked about its the lounge itself” says Courtney Lewis current student at LIU. Many of our students feel like there are not much activities going on at the lounge during the day so therefore they cannot really criticize the staffs on their work ethics.

“The goal for the upcoming Academic year is to have better promotions and also bring more people together…” says Ashley Best who is the Associate Director of Student Life and Leadership Development and also the Chairman for the Avena Lounge. There will also be event coordinators that will help plan more activities for the student body.   More karaoke,

All-day table top games would be an interesting thing” says Ashley Theagene current student. Several students think it would be a great idea if we have some actions during the day so The Lounge can feel live. Students visits the Avena whenever they have break from classes and often time there are not much to do, but to play games and watch TV. Having activities during the day would be interesting and also it would be more live. Since Avena Lounge is the Social Hub on our campus it would bring more people together and our students would always find something to do when they come to their hangout spot.

WHO RUN THE AVENA? BEST!!!!!!!

In 1989 Brooklyn Campus Social Hub was opened, which is known as The Avena Lounge. It was first ran by Student Government Association.  “When I was a student at LIU the Avena Lounge was mostly for parties, there were no special events” says Mr. Best the Associate Director of Student Life and Leadership Development and also the Chairman for the Avena Lounge. Ever since 1995 Mr. Best took over The Lounge he has been improving it. Avena Lounge became a Social Hub, a hangout spot for our campus where many organizations and clubs work together with the Avena Staffs to create Events.

Mr. Best has been looking in different avenue ways to make Avena Lounge a better establishment, there are always Bi-weekly, Monthly and Annual Events and also other Proceedings with Clubs and Organizations that are on and off campus. When was asked what is next for the Avena Lounge?  “For the Upcoming year I want more collaboration and additional promotions on campus. Also a better look, new furniture, new lighting, I want Avena Lounge to feel Bright and welcome to our students”.  Says Mr. Best although it is not up to him to renovate the Lounge, He is trying really hard to convince the authorities above him.

Having to be in charge of multiple organizations such as Evening Intramurals, Avena Lounge, Business Operations for the Avena Lounge and Student Organizations and also being an Advisor to many clubs can be very challenging. As the chairman, when putting a staff together, there are some qualities they must show. That is one of the problems Mr. Best faced when recruiting The Avena staffs. “Putting together a good staff that has the visions and missions for the Avena Lounge. Some people don’t one hundred percent maintain family cohesiveness” says Best. Also mentioned, these staffs must be independent and able to work unsupervised since his office is not in the lounge.

Mr. Best ultimate goal for the next upcoming school year are, to have Event coordinators, to do more tabling and promotion and most importantly to bring more people together. On our Facebook page some students felt like The Avena Lounge should have a bartender and also serve hard liquor.  Mr. Best addressed this statement by saying as a University we can only have a license for beer and wine. He also mentioned that he did not know any school that was authorized with a hard liquor license.

SAY WHATTTTT?

Once again summer 2011 the Avena Lounge is closed while school is in full session and the campus is packed with students’ every day. The question that nobody seems to have an answer to is why the Avena Lounge closes every summer? To make things worse this year the game room that is located off DeKalb Avenue remained open. When I had paid them a visit, I was amazed by the installations and embellishment. Everything was modernized including the furniture’s; it has more of a Lounge feel than a game room, the atmosphere was relaxing and well groomed. They have four fifty inches flat screen TV on the walls and nice brand new couches were everywhere.

Many of our students do not even know there is a game room on this campus and of course there were nobody there when I visited. When I asked one of the staffs he mentioned it is usually very quiet and tedious. He also mentioned they have been open since March and mostly the athletes’ visits them every so often. The reason is because it is not as popular as the Avena Lounge, not a lot of people know of its existence. There are no signs anywhere about their business and let’s not forget they never host any events to promote themselves.

What happened to majority rules? Avena Lounge has been the social hub for our campus for over 20 years and things have yet to improve. Shouldn’t Avena Lounge be the one getting modernized furniture? Some students feel like it should start fresh, which would include renovation, different rules and policies. For example The Avena Lounge should remain open throughout the school years which would include summer sessions.

“No, it should not be closed. It should be opened and provide available employment for LIU students who are willing to work the hours. Although it needs to be renovated…ASAP…It still deserves to be opened for the summer…Unless closed for renovations” says Boahen current student at LIU. Many of his fellow students agreed with his statement, there is no reason why Avena Lounge should be closed unless there are works being done to improve its façade.

Should The Avena Lounge Renovate?

When the word “Lounge” is mentioned in a conversation, people often think of good music, an open bar, relaxed and a sociable place.  Is that the feeling students get when they walk in the Avena Lounge? Not according to our facebook page. “Avena lounge can also have a lounge feeling instead of just another empty space in LIU with accent furniture” says Lewis current student at Long Island University. It is the Social Hub of our campus; several events take place at the Avena Lounge every school year, such as The BLACKOUT PARTY which is the biggest party of the fall semester, COMEDY NIGHTS, KARAOKE NIGHTS, SPOKEN WORDS and many more but it seems like most people do not care of how it looks.

After posting a trending topic about what the students would want to improve in the upcoming school year on our facebook page; they all seem to agree that Avena Lounge should look better and it should be improved.  The question is why hasn’t the Avena Lounge been renovated? Since 1989 it has been “The Social Hub Of The Brooklyn Campus”. Isn’t it time for a change? The furniture has been around for a long time and that brings unpleasantness to the lounge. There is also no magnetism when it comes to settings “There should be a separation between the games and the lounge. Oh yeah there should be a constant amount of music like elevator or even a live DJ during the day to create lounge feeling” says Lewis current student.

Also many students feel like there should be open bar available for the older group of students. Although we hosted many parties, some students feel like we need to have more Latinos events. The main topic is should the Avena Lounge renovated? Students who choose to attend Long Island University expected to have a good college experience being that it is a private school and tuition are really high. Being a college student is not all about getting a degree; it is also about the social life on our campus. Attending and hosting events give the students an edge of becoming better net-workers and that is why Avena Lounge plays a big part in our student body. Every semester Avena Lounge works with several clubs and organizations to host social events on our campus and the atmosphere needs to improve.
